Resilience in a Pandemic

By Dr. Greg Quinn, founder of MedChefs

In this period of Covid 19, restricted travel and reduced consumption are creating a smaller ecological footprint. The constant assault humans have imposed on our planet has dramatically decreased. As a result, our planet seems to be healing. Our air is cleaner. Wildlife is reclaiming what was previously theirs. It is truly astonishing how quickly this healing response has become evident. With the right conditions, innate planetary health returns. Can we say the same about the health of our bodies?

Innate healing and wellness response are optimized with the right environment

Have you noticed you don’t have to tell your body how to heal after an injury? For most of us, the body just knows what to do. Just as the planet recovers, our own innate healing and wellness response are optimized with the right environment. A plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, fiber, while minimizing salt, added sugar and processed foods, not smoking and getting regular exercise is the formula needed for increased resilience, enhanced health and healing. Numerous clinical trials have led to this conclusion.

Over 25 years as a cardiologist, I have personally witnessed countless examples of what is possible with nutrition…for better and for worse. So, it’s not a surprise to me that those who suffer the ravages of poor nutrition suffer disproportionately from COVID-19. That is, those who are overweight, or have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease are particularly at risk.

The infrastructure of our society does not favor optimal health

The intent is not to blame the individual. Like the environment our body is similarly assaulted by the tendencies of humanity. Advertisement encourages us to smoke, to consume fat, salt and sugar in insane quantities. We are encouraged to be consumers…spectators of life as opposed to doers. To overcome these forces, we must be aware and make conscious choices on our own behalf.

There is hope…

Indeed, there’s hope. It’s never too late to change. We start by getting out of our own way. Like the planet, our body wants to be healthy. It is amazing how quickly our biochemistry favorably begins to change in response to new healthier dietary habits. With the right environment healing promptly takes over.

The science is clear…you are what you choose to eat. And this is the basis for frailty or resilience. It’s really that simple.

So, seize this opportunity and learn to live into health.
