Diet and the Health of our Nation

Viewpoint — Dr. Greg Quinn

If you need medical attention and if you have adequate insurance in the U.S., you have access to some of the best healthcare on the planet. However, we are failing in the prevention of chronic disease and we are failing to provide adequate care for the millions that are uninsured or under-insured.

As a society, we have a moral obligation to address these problems. We can pay now…or much more later.

Unfortunately, we must rely on our politicians to fix health insurance and to create a solution that makes quality healthcare accessible to all. However, for the prevention of chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, even erectile disfunction we don’t need our politicians. This is something we can do and must do for ourselves.

The typical American diet is killing us

If you don’t smoke, have a normal weight, exercise adequately, have a healthy dietary pattern and normal, blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar levels there is an 88% reduction in cardiovascular disease! The problem is only nearly 1%  of our society gets 100% when taking that test. This is not only a failure for the individual that ends up suffering the consequences of these diseases, but an economic disaster. Of the $3 trillion we spend on healthcare annually in the U.S., 75% of that is on treating diseases that are the result of our diet.

The diet of the typical American is killing us literally and economically.
